South Africa introduces mascot Zakumi
A cute leopard will be the official mascot of the next 2010 World Cup held at South Africa, according to a local TV channel; the major soccer events starts in 626 days.
Zakumi, the official mascot of the next 2010 South Africa FIFA World Cup, was introduced on the TV show "Coca-Cola Soccer Zone" televised on SABC.
The official mascot is a leopard, and it was entirely designed and manufactured at the host country; it is called "ZA" (for South Africa) and "kumi", which is a translation for "ten" in the several languages spoken in there.
Inspired by its soccer idols, Zakumi has green hair to get camouflaged on the pitch.
FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said "Zakumi represents the people, the geography and the spirit of South Africa, in addition to representing the essence of next 2010 World Cup. We are sure it will entertain us before the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, and during next World Cup."
Andries Odendaal, from Cape Town, created the mascot. "Zakumi is a proud South African, so it's the perfect ambassador for the first World Cup held in the African continent. It was born in 1994, the same year of democracy returned to our country; it's young, full of energy, intelligent and ambitious; it's a true inspiration for all, younger and elder, in all countries," 2010 South Africa World Cup Organizing Committee executive chief Danny Jordaan stated.
FIFA official mascot was created for the first time in 1966 for the World Cup held in Ebgland; its name was Willie.
Since then, the mascots were increasingly important because of its positive attitude; in addition, they have the ability to fill each World Cup atmosphere in a unique way.
